From Mental Chaos to Well-Being

Many people have a hard time slowing down their brains or clearing the thoughts in their minds. Thoughts often come at a whirlwind speed, and it can be hard to concentrate on the tasks at hand. Too many thoughts create a sense of overwhelm or mental chaos.

To help overcome overwhelm, write things down.

A good way to clear mental chaos is to transfer thoughts onto paper.

  1. Create a to-do list,
  2. Write a journal entry
  3. Put all your thoughts into a mind map (see for samples)

Once thoughts are recorded, your brain can release them. Additionally, if you feel weighed down by a situation (like an argument or a problem at work), writing about it can help you process your feelings. You can get a better handle on the events, how you feel, and what you might have done differently.

Pause, listen, and identify your emotion.

Take a moment to just breathe and pause so you can listen to your subconscious. Your body reacts physiologically to your subconscious.

Do you have a headache? A stomachache?

These are symptoms of the brain in overdrive. Once you stop and recognize the underlying emotion, working your way through your feelings is easier.

Running from one’s emotions ends in getting caught in your subconscious, which results in some physiological discomfort.

The old saying, ‘you can run, but you can’t hide,’ is very applicable to the mind-body connection.

Identify your values. Set goals.

When your values and goals are aligned, you feel clarity, and as a result, you get motivated to accomplish your goals.

Imagine a ladder.

Every rung on your ladder is an achievement. If you made your bed, that’s a rung on your ladder. Did you brush your teeth? Another rung on your ladder.

Never forget the small achievements as they lead up to bigger accomplishments.

Lastly, look for ways to feel fulfilled at the moment. Those individual moments of fulfillment will accumulate and leave you with a sense of well-being.
